Daylight Savings Time (DST):
Daylight Savings Time is the practice of setting the clocks forward by one hour during the warmer months to extend evening daylight. This means that the clocks are moved forward in spring (“spring forward”) and set back again in the fall (“fall back”) to standard time. The main purpose of DST is to make better use of daylight during the longer days of summer, potentially saving energy and allowing more daylight for outdoor activities in the evening.

Eastern Standard Time (EST):
Eastern Standard Time is the time zone for the eastern part of the United States and Canada during the standard time period (fall and winter months). EST is 5 hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC-5). When DST is in effect, the region switches to Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), which is UTC-4.

History of Daylight Savings Time:

  • The concept of DST was first proposed by Benjamin Franklin in 1784 as a way to save candles by making better use of daylight.
  • The modern implementation of DST began during World War I to conserve fuel by reducing the need for artificial lighting.
  • It was widely adopted during World War II and then standardized in many countries later on.
  • In the United States, the Uniform Time Act of 1966 established the system of DST and standard time zones.
  • Over the years, the dates for starting and ending DST have shifted; notably, the Energy Policy Act of 2005 extended DST by about a month starting in 2007.

DST and EST in 2025:

  • In the Eastern Time Zone, DST begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November.
  • For 2025:
  • DST started on Sunday, March 9, 2025, at 2:00 AM local standard time (clocks move forward to 3:00 AM). This is when the time changes from EST (UTC-5) to EDT (UTC-4).
  • DST ends on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at 2:00 AM local daylight time (clocks move back to 1:00 AM). This is when the time changes back from EDT to EST.

Summary:

  • Eastern Standard Time (EST) is UTC-5, used in fall and winter months.
  • Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) is UTC-4, used in spring and summer months during DST.
  • DST in 2025 starts on March 9 and ends on November 2 in the Eastern Time Zone.
  • The purpose of DST is to make better use of daylight and conserve energy.
