Picking and Carving a Pumpkin for Halloween

How to Pick a Pumpkin:
- Choose the Right Size: Pick a pumpkin that fits your carving design and space where it will be displayed.
- Check the Color: Look for a pumpkin with a deep, consistent orange color without green spots.
- Inspect the Skin: The skin should be firm and free from soft spots, bruises, or cuts.
- Feel the Weight: A good pumpkin feels heavy for its size, indicating thick walls.
- Look at the Stem: A sturdy, greenish stem means the pumpkin is fresh. Avoid pumpkins with a dry or broken stem.

How to Carve a Pumpkin:
- Gather Supplies: You’ll need a pumpkin, carving knife or pumpkin carving kit, spoon or scoop, marker, and a bowl for seeds.
- Cut the Lid: Draw a circle around the stem and cut at an angle to create a lid that won’t fall inside.
- Scoop Out the Insides: Remove all seeds and pulp until the walls are about 1 inch thick.
- Draw Your Design: Use a marker to sketch your pattern on the pumpkin.
- Carve the Design: Carefully cut along the lines, pushing out pieces as you go.
- Light It Up: Place a candle or LED light inside and replace the lid.
- Preserve Your Pumpkin: To keep it fresh longer, apply petroleum jelly on cut edges or store it in a cool place.
