Eastertide Day 17 Tuesday May 6 2025
John 6: 28-35 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”
30 So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’[c]”
32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”
35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty

In this passage, the crowd asks Jesus what they must do to perform the works of God. Jesus responds by pointing them to the central act of faith: believing in Him whom God has sent. He shifts their focus from human effort to divine grace, emphasizing that the true “work” is to trust in God’s provision through Christ. The crowd, still seeking tangible signs, recalls the manna given in the wilderness. But Jesus reveals Himself as the true Bread of Life, the sustenance that satisfies the deepest hunger of the soul.
During Eastertide, this message resonates deeply. Christ’s resurrection is the ultimate sign of God’s provision, the living proof that He is the bread that brings eternal life. Just as the manna sustained Israel in the desert, Jesus sustains us in our spiritual journey. In this season of joy and new life, we are invited to renew our faith, to partake fully of the Bread of Life, and to trust in God’s unfailing grace.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, Bread of Life, In this season of resurrection, we come to You with hearts full of gratitude. You satisfy the hunger of our souls and quench the thirst of our spirits. Teach us to trust in You fully, to seek not the perishable, but the eternal. Help us to believe in the One whom God has sent and to live in the light of Your resurrection. As we journey through Eastertide, may we be nourished by Your presence and transformed by Your grace.
Amen.
