Detroit Style Pizza

Ingredients:

For the Dough:

  • 3 1/4 cups (415g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 1/4 tsp instant yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 cup (240ml) warm water
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

For the Sauce:

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Toppings:

  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup brick cheese (or more mozzarella if unavailable), cubed or shredded
  • 20-25 pepperoni slices (or toppings of your choice)

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

  1. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
  2. Slowly add warm water and olive oil. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  4. Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough inside, and cover it with plastic wrap or a damp towel. Let it rise for 1-2 hours until it doubles in size.

Step 2: Prepare the Sauce

  1. Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add garlic, oregano, and red pepper flakes. Sauté for 30 seconds.
  2. Add crushed tomatoes, sugar, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until slightly thickened. Set aside to cool.

Step 3: Assemble the Pizza

  1. Preheat your oven to 500°F (260°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13-inch pan (or a Detroit-style pizza pan) generously with olive oil.
  3. Punch down the dough and press it into the pan, spreading it to the edges. Let it rest for 15 minutes if it resists stretching.
  4. Layer the mozzarella and brick cheese evenly across the dough, ensuring the cheese touches the edges of the pan for that crispy edge.
  5. Add pepperoni slices or your preferred toppings on top of the cheese.

Step 4: Bake the Pizza

  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and the edges are golden and crispy.
  2. Remove the pizza from the oven and spread the prepared sauce in two thick, straight lines across the top.

Step 5: Serve and Enjoy

  1. Let the pizza cool slightly before slicing.
  2. Serve and enjoy your authentic Detroit-style pizza!
