Day 3 of Lent, Friday Feburary 20th 2026

Scripture

“Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.”1 Kings 19:11-12

Reflection

Yesterday, we found our “secret place,” closing the door on the world’s noise. Today, the challenge is to listen for the unexpected. When we imagine God speaking, we often picture thunderous pronouncements or dramatic signs—the “wind, earthquake, and fire” of Elijah’s experience. Our busy, high-stimulation lives train us to expect grand spectacles.

But in the profound quiet, Elijah found God in a “gentle whisper.” This is a powerful reminder for our Lenten journey. God often doesn’t shout over our chaos; He waits for us to calm down enough to hear the subtle, the soft, the almost imperceptible. This whisper might be an idea that gently nudges you, a feeling of peace that settles over you, or a quiet reassurance in your spirit. It’s in the moments when we stop trying so hard to hear, and simply allow ourselves to be present, that His voice can finally break through.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, my heart is often tuned to the loud and the urgent. I confess that sometimes I miss You in the quiet because I’m looking for something grander. Today, open my ears and my heart to Your gentle whisper. Help me to quiet my own thoughts and expectations so that I can truly hear Your loving presence in the ordinary moments. Teach me to listen not just with my ears, but with my soul. Amen.
