Fourth Sunday of Advent, Sunday December 21, 2025

Matthew 1:18-24 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.

This passage tells the story of the birth of Jesus Christ from Joseph’s perspective. It begins with the news that Mary, his betrothed, is found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph, described as a righteous man, initially plans to quietly divorce her to avoid public disgrace. However, an angel appears to him in a dream, reassuring him that Mary’s child is conceived by the Holy Spirit and instructing him to take Mary as his wife. Joseph obeys without hesitation, demonstrating faith and trust in God’s plan. This passage highlights themes of obedience, trust, and God’s intervention in human history. Joseph’s acceptance of his role in the divine plan reminds us of the importance of listening to God and acting with courage and faith, even when the path is uncertain.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of Jesus, born into this world through Your divine plan. Help me to trust You as Joseph did, even when the way seems unclear or difficult. Give me the courage to obey Your will with faith and humility. May I be open to Your guidance and willing to play my part in Your greater purpose. Strengthen my trust in Your promises and help me to live according to Your love and grace.
In Jesus’ name, I pray,
Amen.
