Eastertide Day 49 Saturday June 7 2025
John 21: 20-25 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”) 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”
22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.” 23 Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?”
24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.
25 Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.

In this passage, we witness a profound moment between Jesus and His disciples after His resurrection. Peter turns and sees the disciple whom Jesus loved following them, and he inquires about his destiny. Jesus responds by reminding Peter to focus on his own path rather than comparing himself to others. This teaches us about the importance of staying true to our own calling and trusting God with the journeys of those around us.
As we reflect during Eastertide, the resurrection season invites us to embrace new life and transformation. Jesus’ conversation with Peter encourages us to live faithfully in the present, not distracted by comparisons or concerns about others’ roles. Instead, we are called to trust God’s plan for ourselves and others.
The passage also hints at the mystery of faith—some things are beyond our understanding, but we can rest assured in Jesus’ love and guidance. The resurrection assures us that life triumphs over death, and we are invited into this hope daily.
Prayer: Risen Lord, thank You for the gift of new life and hope that Eastertide brings. Help me to focus on the path You have set before me, without distraction or envy. Teach me to trust Your plan for my life and for the lives of those around me. May I walk faithfully in Your love, embracing the transformation You offer.
Grant me the grace to live in the joy of Your resurrection each day, confident that You guide and sustain me.
Amen.
