5th Sunday in Lent April 6th 2025
Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. 3 Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, 5 “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.” 6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.
7 “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. 8 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”
Reflection for 6th Sunday in Lent

In today’s Gospel, we witness an intimate moment between Jesus and His friends in Bethany. Mary’s act of anointing Jesus’ feet with costly perfume is a profound gesture of love and devotion. She offers what is precious to her, pouring it out without hesitation, preparing Him for what is to come. Her actions remind us of the sacrificial love that Lent calls us to embody.
Meanwhile, Judas challenges the act, questioning its merit and cost. His focus on material value blinds him to the deeper spiritual significance. This contrast invites us to reflect on our own priorities—what do we cling to that might prevent us from fully surrendering to God? Are we willing to offer our most valuable gifts in service to Christ and others?
As we journey through Lent, let us ask ourselves: How can we show extravagant love for Jesus today? What can we offer—our time, talents, or resources—to honor Him and serve those in need? May Mary’s example inspire us to act with boldness and generosity, trusting that every act of love glorifies God.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, Teach us to love You with the same devotion Mary showed as she anointed Your feet. Help us to give sacrificially, worship wholeheartedly, and serve selflessly. During this Lenten season, may our lives become a fragrant offering that brings You honor and glory. Strengthen us to stand firm in our faith, even when criticized, and remind us of the ultimate sacrifice You made for us. Transform our hearts, Lord, that we may follow You more closely each day. Amen.
